Astigmatism

Astigmatism is a medical term that refers to a standard and treatable eye issue that impacts about 1 in 3 people.  Astigmatism can potentially distort or blur one’s vision, because part of the eye is more curved than it should be. The best way to properly diagnose astigmatism is through an eye exam performed by one of our eye doctors at Apple Valley Eye Center Inc. in Yakima, WA. Understand more about astigmatism by reading the exert below.

Astigmatism Symptoms

Astigmatism is a tiny mechanical defect, rather than the result of eye disease. Astigmatism occurs when the cornea (corneal astigmatism) or the lens (lenticular astigmatism) are irregularly shaped. If you have astigmatism, you may experience these symptoms:

  • Blurred Vision.
  • Headaches.
  • Needing to Squint to Improve Vision.
  • Eye Strain.
  • Difficulty Seeing at Night.

Astigmatism Types

Eye doctors and other medical professionals classify astigmatism based on where it occurs in the eye about the pupil. Therefore, there are three forms to understand:

  • Myopic Astigmatism
  • Hyperopic Astigmatism
  • Mixed Astigmatism

Primary Causes of Astigmatism

Anyone can experience astigmatism. It is a condition that you can be born with or develop at any time during your life. Doctors do not know why the cornea or lens's shape differs from person to person. Although this condition can get better or worse over time, and likely a genetic component. Other astigmatism causes include those listed below:

  • Eye Disease
  • Eye Injury
  • Surgical Complications

Astigmatism Treatment Options

Two primary methods of treatment do not include refractive or laser surgery. These effective options correct one’s vision, but will not adjust the shape of the eye:

  • Corrective Glasses - These compensate for uneven an uneven lens or cornea.
  • Contact Lenses - Similar to glasses, an optometrist can help you select the best type of contacts (soft, gas-permeable, or hybrid)
