Floaters & Spots

Floaters and Spot Treatment

While floaters and spots in the eye can be unnerving, it's important to note that they are hardly ever dangerous. However, we at Apple Valley Eye Center Inc. want to help patients understand the difference between floaters and other serious conditions. That's why our optometrist recommends stopping by for a visit if you're not experiencing changes in floaters and spots in the eye. We're here to serve residents of Yakima, WA, and surrounding areas. From preventing eye disease to cataracts, our thorough eye exam can determine the root cause of your floaters and ensure maximum eye health.

What Causes Floaters and Spots in the Eye?

The most common cause of floaters is age-related changes. This gel-like substance that fills the center of your eye can become more liquidated with age, causing microscopic fibers to accumulate and cast shadows on the retina. As a result, floaters can appear as small dots, threads, or cobwebs.

However, floaters can also be caused by retinal tears or detachment, eye bleeding, uveitis inflammation, and other serious conditions requiring immediate medical attention. Any serious changes in floaters combined with other symptoms, such as pain, swelling, changes in vision, or physical injuries, should be addressed immediately.

How Are Floaters and Spots Treated?

Floaters caused by age-related changes to the vitreous usually do not need any treatment. However, if they affect your vision, our experienced optometrist may suggest a laser procedure called a vitrectomy to remove the floaters.

For more serious conditions, such as retinal tears or detachment, we may recommend medical treatments, such as injections or surgery. Our optometrist will review all options and work with you to find the best course of treatment. In addition, they'll conduct a thorough vision exam and discuss how your floaters have changed over time. We'll also perform diagnostic tests to rule out all serious conditions.

Will My Floaters Ever Be Cured?

It's difficult to say whether floaters will be completely cured since they are a natural part of aging. However, at Apple Valley Eye Center Inc, we'll work with you to find solutions that help improve your vision and maximize your eye health. We understand that floaters can be concerning, so we'll provide you with the information and resources to make an informed decision about your eye care.
