If you're considering LASIK surgery, it's a good idea to consider if your lifestyle will allow you to properly prepare and recover from this surgery. While the surgery itself will only take few minutes, it is crucial that patients follow all instructions. An optometrist on our team will go over these instructions with you and help ensure that you have a clear understanding of them. Be sure to ask any questions you may have at your next appointment, and don't hesitate to call the office if there are any problems or you have an additional question about your treatment. We at Apple Valley Eye Center serving Yakima, WA, know a lot about LASIK pre and post op.
What to Know
Prior to the surgery, you will need to make an appointment with the eye surgeon in order to determine if you are a good candidate. During this appointment, the eye doctor will review all instructions and ensure that you and your eyes are healthy enough to undergo surgery.
The eye doctor may tell you to not wear contact lenses for several weeks before the surgery in order to avoid the possibility of scratching your eyes. Be sure to tell our office immediately if there are any accidents or injuries to your eyes. On the day of the surgery, you may be able to eat and drink since you are likely not undergoing general anesthesia. You may want to make sure that you have some food in your stomach, in fact, because pain killers tend to be easier to take when you are not hungry. Have a friend or relative drive you to the surgery center, or at the very least plan for them to pick you up after the surgery.
Once you're out of surgery, you may be given dark glasses to wear and told to go home and rest as much as possible. You will not be able to drive yourself home! Once home, you may need to take a regimen of anti-bacterial eye drops every hour, along with drugs to control the pain and promote eye healing. Many patients report that their eyes feel scratchy or very dry, but most do not experience a high level of pain. In fact, many of our patients will sleep for most of the day and night before coming back to the office the next day for a follow-up appointment.
