Information on Eye Conditions
Dry Eye
Dye eye is a common condition in dry, sunny areas like Yakima. There are a variety of management options for dry eye which will improve patient comfort and vision. Depending on the severity of the dry eye the doctors may recommend artificial tear/lubricating drops, punctual plugs, Restasis, and/or surgery.
Common complaints reported by patient with dry eyes:
  • Scratchy or gritty feeling
  • Eyes are red at the end of the day
  • Eyes water
  • Vision varies with blinking
  • Contact lenses become dry and uncomfortable
The natural lens in the eye gradually becomes less clear as we get older. As the lens gets cloudy vision becomes impaired. When the cataract affects the vision to the extent that you cannot read or see distant objects comfortably, we will recommend cataract surgery.

Diabetic patients should have a dilated retinal examination each year. Early detection and treatment has been proven to slow the progression of diabetic eye disease. Diabetes often stimulates the growth of new blood vessels in the back of the eye, which ultimately leak and damage the retina. Undetected retinal changes may lead to permanent vision loss.
Age Related Macular Degeneration
Macular Degeneration is a leading cause of vision loss in Americans. It is a condition that affects the macula which is the area of the retina responsible for central vision. When damage occurs in this area, patients may see distortion or a loss of their central vision.
There are two forms of Age Related Macular Degeneration: a dry and a wet form. In both cases it is important to have regular eye exams to monitor for progression.

Glaucoma is a condition that results in the loss of nerve tissue in the back of the eye. Often this damage is the result of increased eye pressure. It is important for patients to know that this condition is painless and can worsen without obvious changes to a person’s vision. Advanced stages of glaucoma involve significant nerve tissue loss and a reduced field of vision. Once damage occurs it cannot be reversed. Our comprehensive eye exams include tests which screen for glaucoma in all of our patients.
Glaucoma - Family Eye Exams in Yakima, WA
These tests include a eye pressure measurement, a screening for peripheral vision loss and an evaluation of the optic nerve tissue.
